Curriculum

Subjects at Perth College are designed to deliver a well-rounded education, develop world-ready youth, and equip girls with the skills to make a difference in the community.

An inquiry approach to learning is utilised in the Junior School, and the girls benefit from specialist teachers in Music, Physical Education, Art, Languages (Indonesian in Years 1 and 2; French in Year 3) and Library.

In the Senior School, girls from Years 7 to 12 are afforded an academically-rich curriculum to meet the needs of each phase of their development, allowing them to discover their capabilities in a range of learning areas.

Learning Enrichment commences in the Junior School and continues across the Senior School, recognising each girl’s skills and talents.

Perth College is active in the development of education in Western Australia through providing advice, trialling the curriculum and contributing work and programme samples.

Facilities

Perth College offers first-class facilities such as Excelsior House, which provides a base for our Year 12 students as they prepare for life beyond the school grounds. The facility incorporates flexible spaces that mirror universities and modern workplaces.

The Jean Rogerson Science Centre houses a purpose-built, state-of-the-art learning environment. This facility is fully equipped with wet labs attached to each classroom, as well as a photography darkroom.

With a strong focus on performing arts, the School boasts numerous spaces for tuition, rehearsals, group lessons and performances, including our 650-seat Judith Cottier Theatre.

We also pride ourselves on our sporting facilities and equipment. Our gymnasium is equipped with cardio and weight equipment, and there is a heated 50m swimming pool with views to the Perth. Girls also have the chance to train on netball and tennis courts, which are equipped with floodlights for early morning and evening sessions.

With stunning views out to the city, our Library encourages a life-long appreciation of learning and reading and enables students and staff to become effective users of ideas, information and technology. Its Junior and Senior School collections comprise more than 30,000 resources.

Set amongst our historical buildings and new facilities, there are beautiful playgrounds and open spaces to burn off energy, or relax and reflect.

Technology

Technology supports the curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12.

In the Junior School, all girls have access to networked computers, iPods and iPads. There are interactive whiteboards in all classrooms and students have access to notebook computers.

Personal Learning Devices (PLDs) have value-added to the curriculum for not only students in Years 7 to 10 but also their teachers. The Learning Powered by Technology project will be rolled out until 2015, when every Senior School student has their own PLD.

The PLD is considered to be the student's mobile classroom and the School's portal/intranet the virtual classroom, enabling the 'anywhere, any time' learning concept to becoming a reality.

Perth College has invested in state-of-the-art infrastructure including wireless technology, smart boards, industry standard and educational software and systems.

These technologies in conjunction with traditional classroom best practices provide our girls with a 21st Century education.

Co-Curricular

Our service learning program involves all girls from Kindergarten through to Year 12. Across the school, girls have opportunities to give back to the community such as the bush rejuvenation project involving our Kindergarten girls through to our Year 10s having the opportunity to participate in experiential service learning opportunities in the Solomon Islands and Cambodia. In addition, our comprehensive adventure learning program from Year 4 to Year 10 reinforces these principles and challenges girls to use their combined strengths in an outdoor context.

Perth College offers an extensive co-curricular program, such as performing arts and sports including swimming, tennis, netball (one of the largest school netball programs in the state) and hockey through to AFL and cricket. The School is renowned for its excellence in Music, Dance and Drama in which girls can participate in musicals, youth theatre, solo performances, concert bands, chamber groups and orchestras.

Boarding

The Boarding House is home to 110 students in Years 7 to 12 from across regional WA. Our school and Boarding House are located in the leafy suburb of Mount Lawley, close to airports, bus and train terminals, and major transport routes. Boarders are only a five-minute walk from the heart of Mount Lawley and just 3km from the Perth central business district, allowing easy access to amenities for recreation, events and personal appointments.

The School understands the move to the city for young girls is a momentous occasion and its custom-designed On Board programme helps students transition into boarding life and settle into their new surroundings.

A variety of practical experiences, projects and activities is tailored to each year level and Perth College’s core values – Capable, Courageous, Caring – permeate throughout.

The course includes camps, environmental projects, domestic skills such as cooking, sewing and etiquette, event organisation, mentoring and community service. Each activity is as interactive and practical as possible, guided by enthusiastic, skilled members of the Boarding House team.

The development of responsibility and the value placed on community service and challenge are strong features of the Boarding House.

Boarders form the heart of Perth College and with extensive academic and co-curricular opportunities, the girls become independent and resilient, and reap the rewards of investing themselves in boarding life.

Staff work hard to create and maintain a happy, supportive environment for the girls and the Boarding House is vibrant and welcoming.

Old Girls' Association

The Old Girls' Association (OGA) proudly boasts an active membership of 3,500 members and, in 2013, celebrated 100 years as a social and fundraising body.

The OGA is based on the Perth College Campus within Myalla House, and arranges regular fundraising and social functions throughout the year. This includes 18-month and 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 year reunions held in WA, interstate and overseas.
