Message from the Principal

Camberwell Grammar School was founded in 1886 and has long been one of Melbourne’s leading independent schools for boys. We aim to give every boy in our care the very best possible education to prepare him for life beyond school.

Camberwell Grammar School school is a ‘learning community’ and we encourage staff, students, past students and parents to involve themselves with its values. We are proud of the warm spirit that characterises our school family.

Camberwell Grammar School school has established a climate in which the potential for boys to achieve to the best of their ability is nurtured. In keeping with this, the school has established a strong tradition of high academic performance with an open entry policy.

We are also committed to the traditions of a rounded liberal education. Therefore the program encourages all students to develop themselves in a range of areas and activities whether they be academic, in the arts or on the sporting field.

The Curriculum

The curriculum for Camberwell Grammar School has been developed as a cohesive program which begins in the Junior School (Pre-Preparatory to Year 5), continues through the Middle School (Year 6, 7 and 8) and into Senior School (Years 9,10,11 and 12).

Students at Camberwell Grammar School benefit from a commitment to excellence in teaching, fine facilities and resources, and clearly stated expectations and standards. Also on offer is a range of extension and support programs at all year levels.

Co-Curricular Program

A rich co-curricular offering at Camberwell Grammar School includes a wide range of sports – both traditional and non-traditional, individual and team, contact and non contact. Examples range from cricket, football, athletics and tennis through to lawn bowls, skiing, triathlon and kayaking.

Cultural life at Camberwell Grammar School has long had a high profile through an extensive music program with orchestras and choirs at all levels and an extensive program of instrumental teaching and concert performance. The school also undertakes a number of dramatic productions each year and these often involve other schools in the local community.

Pastoral Care

Students at Camberwell Grammar School are cared for as individuals with differing abilities, interests and goals. Skilled professionals work to further the self-esteem of each boy and his capacity to meet the rigorous demands of learning in an academic environment.

The pastoral care structure at Camberwell Grammar School focuses on the year group in the Junior and Middle Schools and the House system in the Senior School. At Year 9 each boy is assigned a Head of House and an individual tutor who usually remains constant during his secondary schooling. The system is practical, building a bridge of understanding between the boy, his family and the school.
