Excellence in Education

Cornish Campus was originally established in 1987 as a campus of the renowned St Leonard’s College and has developed into a leading school in its own right.

For the 24 years an outstanding private school educational curriculum has been developed that is now internationally recognised as being innovative and leading edge in the education of our next generation of leaders.

The College offers an Early Learning Centre, a primary school and secondary school for years 7 to 9. Year 10, 11 and 12 are planned to be introduced in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Educational Philosophy

At Cornish College our educational philosophy is based on the following core tenets:

• A vision for the whole community of sustainable living based around the sustainable thinking dispositions (personal, socio-cultural, urban/technological, natural dimensions).
• Emphasis on creativity and the development of thinking skills.
• Differentiated curriculum to cater for different learning styles.
• Strong emphasis on building foundation skills for learning through structured inquiry.
• Children and staff work together collaboratively in a team structure.

Every Child is Unique

Central to our approach is the image of the child as bringing rich experiences to their journey in learning.

With this in mind, the role of the teacher is to explore their students' interests and build on their prior knowledge. This taps into their natural curiosity and interests which allows students to construct their own learning environment and build strong understandings of educational concepts.

The following principles are embedded in our curriculum design:
• The image of the child as a powerful learner.
• The child as a primary researcher.
• The child as a collaborator
.• The teacher as a facilitator.
• The environment as the third teacher.
• Making learning and thinking visible.
• The hundred languages of children.

Learning Environment

Outstanding outcomes can be achieved by students of the youngest age because their educators are respectful of what they already know.

The College provides a physical setting that facilitates experiential learning for all ages including the construction of large scale paintings, drawings, models, gardens and structures. Areas for small groups of students to work together allows for rich and motivational learning spaces. Recognition is given to the importance of natural light and the power of the ‘learning environment’ in what has become recognised as the ‘third teacher’ after parents and school educators. Time is structured in such a way that students have the time they need to pursue their interests and have the space to be able to leave their projects as 'work in progress'.

Early Learning Centre

Our Early Learning Centre is internationally recognised as a centre of excellence for children from 3 to 5 years of age.

The Centre values and respects children, their families and staff and fosters a learning environment that provides a foundation for young children to become responsible citizens of the world.

A range of learning experiences are offered that foster self-esteem, resilience, reflection, imagination, curiosity and the motivation to become a lifelong learner.

Primary and Secondary Years

The Cornish College Prep to Year 6 program provides an excellent educational program for students in a friendly, caring environment.

Our curriculum promotes the use of an experiential, structured, inquiry-based approach to learning. The children develop a deep understanding of important concepts and conduct research into local and global issues of significance. Students make connections through learning about life in school, life at home and life in the world.

Students in Prep to Year 6 attend a variety of specialist classes including Library, Music, Art, Languages Other Than English and Physical Education.

In Years 7 - 9 students have classes in English, humanities, science and mathematics and the integration of these disciplines means that teachers work with students to make connections in their learning. Inquiry learning allows students to apply their knowledge and skills in many ways, thus helping them learn in a meaningful context. In addition to these core subjects, Years 7 - 9 also participate in physical education, art, music, drama, materials technology, food technology, environmental studies and a language.

The outcomes generated through the Year 7 - 9 programs reflect the value of students performing at personal best levels in a flexible, well-managed classroom environment.
