About AB Paterson

A.B. Paterson College was founded in 1991 and has become known for achieving high academic, sporting and cultural outcomes in an environment of support and care for each student.

The College's philosophy to base learning on the individual needs of students is supported by its Motto of Excellence, Care and Commitment.

We cater to students from the age of two in our Early Learning Centre to Year 12. Education is an exciting adventure, one the College hopes students will enjoy during school and beyond.

We strive for great things for all our students because each student has something unique to give to others and to the world by leading in his/her own way.

Teaching for Understanding

A.B. Paterson College is recognised internationally as a leading school in adopting the Teaching for Understanding framework from Prep - Year 12. TfU was developed by Project Zero at Harvard Graduate School of Education, USA.

Whether measuring the chemical balance of local creeks, building rockets, creating multi-dimensional models in mathematics or art, composing songs,or digging for artifacts, students learn better by becoming practically involved in the learning journey.

In every class, students learn by participating, exploring, leading and collaborating. Teachers constantly encourage students to learn by searching for new possibilities and experiences. This method ensures relevance to the academic curriculum, stimulating interest and application.

When we understand why we are doing something, it is much easier to apply ourselves to any task. The task becomes purposeful and relevant - in other words we have gained understanding, not just knowledge.

At every age, enquiring minds are given opportunities that allow them to grow into inspired young men and women.

Modern Facilities

Students enjoy modern buildings with excellent facilities including our Information Resource Centre, robotics and control systems facility, Hospitality kitchen and restaurant, purpose built Mathematics Learning and Research Centre, multi-purpose centre with sports courts (gym under fit-out), and heated pool, outdoor sports courts and ovals, eight science laboratories, a performing arts centre with full fly tower and state of the art audio/lighting rigs.

Classrooms are air-conditioned. Wireless network operates across the College so that information technology and digital resources such as electronic whiteboards are everyday tools in learning.

Learning Enhancement Programme

Our Learning Enhancement team comprises a range of professionals with expertise to provide professional advice, student assessment, and programmes for students requiring either support or acceleration according to individual learning needs.

Our team includes a paediatric physiotherapist, special education teachers, a literacy specialist, gifted and talented specialist, educational psychologist, and counsellor/careers advisor. They are supported by a number of trained learning assistants who also work with students.

Extra Curricular Activities

The College has an international focus with students offered the opportunity to compete and participate globally in future problem solving, mathematics and community work.

With a plethora of co-curricular and cultural activities available, including public speaking, debating, choirs, bands, musical theatre productions and sporting teams, all students’ interests, passions and talents are catered for at the College.

Leadership is encouraged through a range of activities from Prep through to Year 12. We believe that leaders are not born, but developed, and each person is capable of leading in his or her own way and according to the situation.

Pastoral Care

While the College is unique in not promoting religious faith, students' character development is a major focus.

We believe that ‘who’ a child becomes is the most important outcome of education. A well-rounded, caring, confident young person, with a positive attitude, can be successful in personal relationships, in a career and in the community.

A.B.Paterson College uses the Virtues programme as the foundation of its personal development lessons. The Virtues chart focuses on elements of good character identified across race and religion as essential to good character development.

The College has a qualified Educational and Counselling Psychologist, and a Careers and Personal Counsellor on staff to assist students with any necessary social and psychological support, as well as guidance with regard to personal, family, friendship, emotional and academic difficulties. Parents have full access to engaging the counselling and support services for their child.
