ABOUT WILDERNESS

Since its establishment in 1884, Wilderness School has been at the forefront of girls' education helping to shape the lives and careers of many thousands of young women preparing to face the challenges of a changing world.

As we move into the 21st century it is vital that our girls are equipped with the skills to empower them to think for themselves, to be self directed and to accomodate change. They must have the capacity to anticipate problems and search for creative solutions. We understand that the delivery of a world class education demands a futures focus.

At Wilderness, we are dedicated to understanding and meeting the differing needs of girls and young women in each phase of their development from childhood through adolescence to young adulthood.

We challenge our girls to 'dream big', to think about their thinking and learning, to be innovative and creative ... and always to be true to themselves.

It's this understanding of girls, of how they learn best and our commitment to all of our students as individuals that sets Wilderness apart.

OUR SCHOOL VALUES

At Wilderness we are committed to being true to the vision of the founders, the Misses Brown, and are guided by their motto ‘Semper Verus’, “Always True”. They founded this school on their belief in the need for unlimited kindness in relationships, joy in learning and academic adventure, a spirit of humility and the balance between seeking individual excellence and success and generous service to the community.

At Wilderness School we promote, enable and nurture:

• Adventurous Learning: healthy, creative, independent and cooperative learners who are seekers of excellence and success

• Responsible Citizenship: responsible, tolerant and generous global citizens and leaders, who act with integrity for a socially just world and a sustainable future for the Earth

• Respectful Relationships: compassion and kindness, hospitality and friendliness

• A True and Courageous Self: resilient, vibrant and spiritually aware girls, confident in themselves and appreciative of others.

OUR CURRICULUM

The atmosphere in every classroom is positive, supportive and challenges each girl to achieve her best. Our aim is to foster a love of learning in our students so that they will be able to become independent learners who are confident, creative problems solvers and decision makers.

In order to do this we use a variety of sound educational approaches such as Reggio Emilia in our Early Years program, our Thinking and Learning curriculum that caters for all girls R-12 and our Resilience curriculum that is designed to promote optimism and courage in the face of adversity. From Reception to Year 12, we cater for the cognitive and affective needs of gifted and talented students. Support staff work with girls, individually and in small groups, to help them address challenges in their learning.

We are committed to providing the best education for each of our students, enabling them to follow their chosen careers.

Habits of Mind ensure that students have the dispositions to transfer their knowledge and skills in new situations.

The development of curricula based on the process Understanding by Design, enables teachers to plan for deep understanding of essential knowledge and skills required in the 21st century.

Service Learning encourages our students to be generous in their contributions to society.

BOARDING

Our philosophy at Wilderness is to make the boarding community a second family for the girls. In pleasant, welcoming surroundings they are encouraged to study, live harmoniously together and develop into independent and responsible young women.

A combination of heritage buildings and purpose built contemporary accommodation provides girls with excellent study, computing, recreational and dining facilities. There is a well organised routine to enable girls to balance their commitments to study, sport and leisure activities.

Boarding is a unique experience. Special bonds and characters are formed. Life-long friendships develop in an environment of mutual respect, warmth and sense of family.

Girls are encouraged to invite friends and family members to stay or drop in for dinner. Flexible leave arrangements ensure that close family and friendship ties are maintained while girls are living away from home.
