Principal’s Welcome

St John’s College is a unique Catholic co-educational day and boarding school. Its uniqueness lies in its environment, its history, its tradition and culture and the diversity of students.

The college is idyllically located in the beautiful surrounds of the Darwin Botanical Gardens. Its two campuses Hartzer (Middle School) and Chevalier (Senior School) are connected by an overhead bridge that spans these gardens.
St John’s is proud of its history and the strong tradition of its founders, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) and the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH). This, and the college motto, ‘Strong in Faith’ guide our values and actions.

St John’s is a vibrant, diverse and harmonious multi-cultural community. Our students choose to come to St John’s from the Kimberley region of Western Australia, from the Northern Territory remote, rural and urban regions and from locations across Asia and Africa.

St John’s students are its best advertisement. They excel in education, sports and the Arts through the many curricular and extra-curricular opportunities provided to them. Our students are caring, compassionate, confident and demonstrate their strength of leadership in the five Rs:
• Relationship building
• Respect – giving and gaining
• Responsibility – for their actions
• Reliability – trusted to do the right thing
• Risk taking – face up to challenges and find creative solutions to problems.

The extensive curriculum at St John’s provides students with opportunities to focus on their interests and strengths whilst also challenging them to achieve their personal best at all levels.

The Boarding residences at St John’s are safe, friendly and well resourced. Students are supported in their study sessions and have access to computers and the library. A wide range of supervised activities are undertaken on weekends.

I encourage you to contact the college directly for further information on any aspect of college life.

Boarding

The boarding houses are managed by the Heads of Boarding and staffed by full time, part time and casual house parents. These people are chosen for their Christian values, qualifications and experience in working with children. Their mission is to care for your child, keeping them safe, happy and healthy and to promote and encourage their education and to provide them with a wide range of sporting and recreational activities.

We recognise that boarding is seldom, if ever the same as living at home, but those students who come prepared to grasp the many and varied opportunities that boarding house life offers, thoroughly enjoy the experience and make life long friends.
