At Hunter Valley Grammar School, we recognise that young people pass through several distinct but interrelated phases. Our school organisation into Junior (Preschool to Year 6), Middle (Year 7 to Year 9) and Senior (Year 10 to Year 12) is designed to support this development in an age-appropriate way.
The overall Preschool to Year 12 nature of our school located on one campus has resulted in a warm, family-style atmosphere, and provides a smooth transition between infants, primary and high school.
Hunter Valley Grammar School rests on an attractive, lightly wooded campus over 32 acres offering high quality sporting facilities, cultural arts spaces and tranquil and calming leisure areas.
The school roll is approximately 950 students. Students are drawn from a wide catchment which includes: Maitland, Newcastle, Singleton, Cessnock, Pokolbin, Williamtown, Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens, Port Stephens and Lake Macquarie areas.

The School has a strong involvement in Tournament of Minds and all Year 10s take part in Australian Business Week. We also offer both internal and external opportunities for debating.

The Early Childhood Music is for Preschool to Year 2 students and is run by the Conservatorium. Hunter Valley Grammar School also offers a Strings program for students in Years 3 and 4, a Wind program for Years 5 and 6 and the Guitar and Keyboard for students in Years 7 and 8.

Speech and Drama lessons are available at the School through the Conservatorium and students taking these courses have many competition opportunities. There are annual productions available to students at all year levels. Drama is offered as a full elective course for the HSC.

Outdoor education

The Outdoor Education program is a compulsory element of the curriculum from Years 3-11, and is run by experienced external providers who work closely with Hunter Valley Grammar School staff. The program provides a range of activities including canoeing, fishing, bush-walking, abseiling, rock climbing and skiing.
The Outdoor Education program has been carefully designed to be developmental and aims to encourage confidence and resilience in our young people. The program includes opportunities for students to work together co-operatively while building leadership and relationship skills. Outdoor Education provides a less formal setting in which students also develop initiative as well as an awareness of the environment, bushcraft and safety skills.

Sport

Hunter Valley Grammar School has established a fine reputation for sport. Our qualified staff and professional coaches provide many opportunities for skill and personal development which are in keeping with our balanced educational philosophy.
In its broadest sense, involvement in physical education encourages physical and mental fitness, resilience, promotes teamwork and the ability to set and achieve goals.
The School fields many teams in the traditional sports: rugby, soccer, cricket, netball, basketball, touch-football, swimming, cross-country and athletics. Many of these teams participate in local community competitions. In addition, the School offers opportunities for equestrian pursuits and Rowing (at our complex located nearby on the Hunter River).
Talented students in sport are also encouraged to seek representative selection. This will be at HRIS (Hunter Region) level, AICES (Independent Co-Ed Schools) and CIS (Combined Independent Schools) with ultimate selection in NSW All-Schools teams. We are proud of the fact that we are over-represented in these levels for a school of our size.
